Pavement Crack Sealing Memphis TN

Pavement Crack Sealing in Memphis, TN

Cracking occurs when stress builds up in a surface that exceeds the tensile or shear strength of the pavement, causing a fissure or crack to open.

Untreated cracks can progress from just being a pothole to causing more major damage to the pavement. Cracks on pavement can come in all shapes and sizes. No matter how large the crack is, you need crack sealing to solve the problem.

Address pavement cracks as soon as you can. Otherwise, they can lead to significant problems, ranging from potholes all the way to sub-base failure.

Cracked Pavement Types & Causes

Fatigue cracks form a pattern similar to an alligator’s skin. These cracks result from repetitive traffic loads or high deflection, often due to wet bases or subgrades.

Longitudinal cracks run along the length of the pavement and are caused by thermal stress and/or traffic loading.

Transverse cracks occur perpendicular to the centerline of the pavement or laydown direction. They are generally caused by thermally induced shrinkage at low temperatures.

Block cracks form regular blocks and are the result of age hardening of the asphalt, coupled with shrinkage during cold weather.

Reflective cracks are caused by cracks or other discontinuities in an underlying pavement surface that propagate up through an overlay due to movement at the crack.

Edge cracks are crescent-shaped or fairly continuous cracks that intersect the pavement edge, located within 0.6 meters of the pavement edge, adjacent to an unpaved shoulder.

Slippage cracks produce a characteristic crescent shape and are caused when the top layer of asphalt shears, often due to high deflections and a poor bond between layers.
